Amsterdam isn’t just a city of canals and coffee shops — it’s one of the best cities in Europe for a legendary pub crawl. But if you want to do it right (and survive the night), you’ll need some ground rules.
These aren’t your basic “drink water” tips. These are tried-and-tested pub crawl rules that make the difference between a forgettable bar hop and a story your friends will talk about for years.
Ready to make your crawl epic? Let’s dive in.
Why Amsterdam Is Made for Pub Golf Crawls
-
Bars are close together — no taxis needed
-
Cheap shots, big beers, wild vibes
-
Friendly locals and tons of party tourists
-
No dress code = more fun, less effort
What Is Pub Golf, Again?
Pub Golf is a drinking game disguised as a bar crawl. Each bar is a hole, each drink is a challenge. Your score depends on how fast (and how clean) you finish your drink.
With a scorecard, some dares, and a group of friends, it becomes less about getting drunk — and more about winning the night.
🏌️♂️ Rule #1: Score Every Drink Like a Golf Hole
Every bar = 1 hole. Your drink has "strokes.”
Finish a beer in 3 sips? That’s 3 strokes.
Smash a beer in one go? That’s a hole-in-one.
Spilling or quitting = penalty. 2+ strokes!
🤐 Rule #2: Choose a No-Talking Hole
Pick one hole where no one can speak.
Every word = a penalty shot.
It’s chaos, and it’s hilarious — especially around hole 5, when people start forgetting the rule.
🍻 Rule #3: One New Drink per Bar
No repeating drinks.
That means trying weird beers, sugary cocktails, or that mystery green thing the bartender recommends.
The variety is part of the game.
🚽 Rule #4: No Bathroom Between Hole 4 and Hole 6
Can you make it? Probably not.
Will you try? You better.
Anyone who breaks this rule takes a shot and loses a point.
📱 Rule #5: No Phones for 30 Minutes
Set a timer.
No selfies, no texting, no Google Maps.
Just vibes and memories. Whoever cracks first buys the next round.
👯♀️ Rule #6: Random Group Challenge at Hole 7
Pick something wild for the whole group:
Switch shirts, speak in rhyme, dance battle, switch drinks.
Amsterdam is the city of random fun — lean into it.
🤢 Rule #7: Last to Finish Drinks at Each Hole = Dare
Slowest drinker each round?
They get a dare. No excuses.
We include over 5 dares and 4 questions between the holes in the downloadable PDF route.
🧠 Rule #8: The Crawl Captain Has Final Say
One person is designated “Crawl Captain.”
They decide disputes, call rules, and get a cool hat.
Their word is law (until they forget what the rules are).
💀 Rule #9: Anyone Who Taps Out = Shame Costume
If you quit the crawl early, you wear the costume of shame:
A silly hat, ugly shirt, or a ‘Game Over’ sign.
The shame lives in photos forever.
🎯 Rule #10: Score Everything — and Crown a Winner
At the end, total all the scores.
The person with the lowest score (fewest sips, most dares done) is the Pub Golf Champion.
Winner gets glory. Loser gets a mystery shot chosen by the group.
Bonus: Sample Pub Golf Round in Amsterdam
Hole 3 – Bar Lux
Drink: Mojito
You finish it in 3 strokes = score of 3 strokes
Friend spills half and gives up = score of 7 strokes
Bonus challenge: had to order in a movie quote voice. Bartender laughed. Mission accomplished.
True Crawl Story: The Chicken Hat Incident
We once had a group of 8 do the crawl with a twist:
The worst score after each hole had to wear a ridiculous chicken hat.
By hole 6, the same guy had worn it 4 times. Locals were taking selfies with him.
He became a legend — and also vomited in a canal. Worth it.
Why Most Pub Crawls Fail (and Yours Won’t)
-
People start too hard, too fast
-
No structure = bar arguments
-
Too many boring spots = people leave early
-
No fun rules = just another drinking night
That’s why we built a plug-and-play route.
You start slow, build momentum, add rules, and end with karaoke or chaos.
Either way, it feels like a story — not just bar #1, bar #2, bar #3… snooze.
